Improving Understanding of Pavement Markings

Researcher: Alicia Nelson

Sponsor: Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County

This study sought to determine if drivers noticed and understood the intended meanings of three new types of pavement markings used along the Bellaire Quickline bus route in Houston operated by the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO). CTS researchers surveyed a sample of drivers in the Texas Medical Center area by showing pictures of the three different pavement markings currently being used along the bus routes and asking follow-up questions. The study determined that none of the three types of pavement markings caused any unintended impacts. The results of this project will assist METRO officials with future design and utilization of these types of markings for its bus routes.
