OUR WORK

The CTS approach to address transportation safety is straightforward. We work to understand the underlying issues impacting transportation safety, we develop and deploy materials and programs, and we then assess their effectiveness so improvements can be made to further the positive impact of our work. We conduct work in a wide range of areas with a particular emphasis on those that present the greatest risks to transportation safety. Most recently, our emphasis areas addressed persistently challenging topics in youth, pedestrian, and motorcyclist safety, and persistently challenging road user behaviors/choices such as drinking and driving, speeding, and obeying existing traffic laws.

CTS receives annual support from the State of Texas to achieve our legislative mandate. This support is then used in two primary ways:

TxDOT Traffic Safety Projects

Behavior traffic safety projects awarded by TxDOT require contractors to provide match funding. CTS provides this match funding for grants awarded to CTS, which is partnered with additional match funding provided by TTI.

Discretionary Projects

CTS uses a portion of the annual support to fund discretionary projects which are intended to conduct research, education, or outreach to improve transportation safety within Texas.

Other Federal and State Projects

CTS conducts work in a wide range of areas with a particular emphasis on those that present the greatest risks to transportation safety. These projects are not supported by CTS funds but instead by a traditional sponsored contract research model.
