Keynote Speakers

Lonny Haschel

We are incredibly fortunate to have Lonny Haschel, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), as our conference emcee this year! Not only will Lonny serve as emcee, but he also is our keynote luncheon speaker. Lonny is a transplanted Texan (from Indiana), and has been with DPS and the Texas Highway Patrol the past 27 years. His duties include media relations and public information officer. He is a child passenger safety technician instructor, has been involved in passenger safety 21 years, and served as National Child Passenger Safety Board member 2018-2021.

Lonny’s philosophy is that CPS is most effective when we work as a community with parents and caregivers. His presentation will showcase effective strategies for building partnerships with law enforcement to enhance CPS education in your community and discuss areas for improvement in educational approaches, addressing bias and implementing cultural competency. He will speak on Wednesday, June 30, 12:00–12:50pm.

David P. Mooney, MD, MPH

David P. Mooney, MD, MPH is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and the Director of the Trauma Center at Children’s Hospital Boston. He obtained his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri and completed a general surgical residency at the University of Vermont. He completed a pediatric surgery fellowship at the Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri and returned to New England to be the Director of the Pediatric Trauma Program at the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Surgery at Dartmouth Medical School. He is the past-chair of the Trauma Committee of the American Pediatric Surgical Association and the pediatric representative on the Verification Review Committee of the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma and is the founding-President of the Pediatric Trauma Society.

Dr. Mooney served in the US Army Medical Reserves for 15 years. He was a member of the MA-1 National Disaster Medical Team and deployed to Haiti immediately after the 2010 earthquake and provided care to adults and children first at the US embassy medical facility then in the field. He directed the emergency resuscitation of the children injured in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

Dr. Mooney is a fellow of the Injury and Violence Prevention, Epidemiology, and Surgical Sections of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Mooney is a reviewer for 22 medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA Pediatrics, Lancet Global Health and the Journal of Trauma. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles and 12 book chapters and is the trauma section editor of a textbook on disaster surgery in austere environments.

Dr. Mooney will address the 2021 Texas Child Passenger Safety Conference on the topic of What Went Wrong, specifically how car seat misuse can result in very serious injuries.

General Session Feature Speakers

Kathleen Klinich, PhD

Dr. Klinich has 31 years of experience performing research on how to protect occupants in motor-vehicle crashes. She earned her PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan. She has led and contributed to dozens of research programs during her career at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, where she is also serving as an Associate Director.

She also serves on the SAE Dummy Testing Equipment Committee and the SAE Child Restraint Systems Committee and is a CPS Technician. Her most recent research efforts have focused on wheelchair transportation safety issues and autonomous vehicles, development of new procedures for assessing child passenger safety, and analysis of crash data to guide future safety priorities.

Dr. Klinich’s general session presentation at the 2021 Texas Child Passenger Safety Conference is titled “Misuse and Best Practice: What Does the Latest Research Show?”

Denise Donaldson

By ever-popular demand, Denise Donaldson of Safe Ride News Publications, will once again join us at the fifth annual Texas child passenger safety conference. As a general session feature, Denise will present: “Honey, Does This Car Seat Make My Rear Seat Look Small?” Denise will be exploring in detail the topic of using car seats in smaller vehicles.

Denise Donaldson is the owner of Safe Ride News Publications, the publisher of the Safe Ride News newsletter, the LATCH Manual, and the School Bus Safety Handbook. She also runs a program that provides checkup events and community classes through Seattle-area hospitals. She holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Washington, and started her career in the banking field. However, when her children were young and still riding in car seats, she was drawn instead to the child passenger safety field, a decision she’s never regretted. She has been a Child Passenger Safety Technician-Instructor since 1998.
