Workshop 1:
Traffic Safety Outreach That Is Different and Effective: Our Driving Concern — Texas Employer Traffic Safety Program Best Practices
Transportation incidents are the leading cause of fatalities in the workplace. Employers, employees and the community benefit when employers put transportation safety in their safety culture. This workshop will provide an understanding of why employers should be included in your outreach and how the Our Driving Concern program has been successful in reaching employees. In addition, program outcomes will be shared about employers who are seeing positive results and behavioral changes.

Workshop 2:
Engineering Approaches to Intersection and Roadway Departure Crashes
Intersection Control Evaluation (ICE) Procedures:
This portion of the workshop will explain what Intersection Control Evaluation is all about, how states generally conduct ICE, where ICE connects to other program-wide initiatives, and introduce ICE tools. As part of the Every Day Counts 2 campaign in 2013–14, considerable progress was made across the United States in advancing innovative intersections, and states and local agencies alike accelerated the implementation of roundabouts, diverging diamond interchanges and J-turns. ICE policies and procedures provide a two-stage, performance-based framework approach to evaluating and choosing intersection geometry and control from a large number of alternatives, including safety considerations.

Roadway Departures:
This portion of the workshop will address strategies for mitigating the number and severity of this serious type of crash. From 2013 to 2015, 54 percent of all of the traffic fatalities in the United States resulted from roadway departure crashes. The workshop will include an overview of effective safety countermeasures, a discussion about selecting the right treatment depending on location characteristics, and a “What If” session, where the instructors and the participants will collectively explore what to do if specific countermeasures cannot be applied to the study location.

Workshop 3:
Drugged Driving in Texas: Trends, Public Opinion, and Enforcement
In this workshop, the instructors will
- Explore current drug-use trends in Texas,
- Share survey results on Texans’ opinions on marijuana-impaired driving and legalization,
- Explain the differences between — and the qualifications provided to law enforcement officers by — SFST, ARIDE and DRE training, and
- Share effective strategies to detect drug-impaired drivers.
